Wetland Management Tools & Techniques
Urbanwater.info
In 2004-2005, an innovative group of 14 NSW councils – the Hunter & Central Coast Regional Environmental Management Strategy group (HCCREMS) -developed a unique, cutting edge water management toolkit – Urbanwater.info. Throughout the history of HCCREMS, water management has remained a key area of innovation and collaboration. For more than 9 years, the HCCREMS group has engaged council planners, engineers, environmental professionals, the community and elected representatives in capacity building programs, seminars and campaigns as well as research and development to improve water management in the region.
Practical Uses
Through the Urbanwater.info website, planners, engineers, environmental professionals, educators, community groups and any interested individuals now have instant access to:
- A comprehensive on-line directory to the latest, best practice in water sensitive urban design, stormwater engineering, catchment management;
- Decision support tools to help address the technical and organisational challenges of managing water sustainably; and
- Educational resources, including a short documentary showcasing best practice from Council innovators in urban, suburban and regional NSW.
The easy access to high quality, cross-disciplinary scientific and technical information makes Urbanwater.info a valuable tool for facilitating a holistic, total water cycle approach to water management. The site uses extensive links and references to relevant Australian and international manuals, articles, models, web pages and case studies, creating a rich, comprehensive, easy to use directory to water management information.
A sophisticated search function within the website is highly useful for locating information on a specific water related topic. It enables students, community groups, home owners, interested individuals and professionals to find answers to specific water management questions on a range of topics, including Wetlands.
Funding
Funded by the NSW EPA Stormwater Trust, the Urbanwater.info project draws on the collective skill, knowledge and experience of local water managers to deliver a definitive resource for local water managers.
