The Ecological Values of Two Previously Unprotected Wetlands in Ballina have been Identified and the Wetlands will be now be Preserved
Minister for Lands, Tony Kelly, recently announced WetlandCare Australia has been appointed to assist the Department of Lands to manage two valuable wetland areas on North Creek at East Ballina.

In a coup for the proper management and conservation of important wetlands in NSW, WetlandCare Australia (WCA) will assist the Department to manage North Creek wetlands. The appointment will ensure these sensitive wetlands are conserved for the benefit of the community and a healthy catchment area.
The initiative to appoint WCA as trust managers is a result of the ‘Innovative Tools Project’ where the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority funded WCA in partnership with the Department of Lands to investigate innovative ways to manage lands with high conservation values on Crown land.
Until recently, both areas were unprotected Crown land and were not under management. The areas have now been included in the Ballina Regional Crown Reserve and will be preserved for their high conservation values. These conservation values include a number of listed Endangered Ecological Communities and threatened flora and fauna species. WCA will work in partnership with the Grafton office of the Department of Lands to manage the wetlands over the next two years.
