Bank erosion and slumping in the Lower Oxley River that will be addressed through this projectThe Lower Oxley River Restoration Project is funded through the NRCMA’s Rivers Project. The Rivers Project aims to develop and implement plans to improve channel structure, water quality and the quality and quantity of riparian vegetation. Targeted funding is made available at least once a year.

Threats and Values

The Lower Oxley River has been identified as possessing high conservation value, however, stretches have been degraded by land use practices. The region is threatened by processes including floodplain stripping, streambed aggradation, weed invasion, grazing, removal of snags, and introduction of barriers to fish passage.

The next phase of the project will protect and regenerate one kilometre of the riparian landscape (vegetation and stream structure) over a 3km stretch of the Lower Oxley River.

Works will include the introduction of innovative in-stream rehabilitation works, and associated riparian revegetation. Stream rehabilitation structures have been designed to enhance aquatic habitat, ensuring a diversity of: stream velocities; stream bedforms (pools and riffles); stream substrates (sediment sizes), and large wood debris.

On-ground works are scheduled to commence in May 2006.

Community Involvement

The NRCMA works to connect with the community and build on work that has already been achieved.

Landholders in the area have been keen to be involved in the project, and their support is fundamental to a successful outcome.
