Local Interest in Restoration Works Being Undertaken in Northern Rivers CMA

Information update of local biodiversity and conservation projects

An information session was held in Crescent Head at the Surf Club on Monday the 17th March, followed by a tour around Goolawah Reserve on Tuesday the 18th March. The aim of the sessions was to highlight some of the work being done in the Crescent Head area by the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority, WetlandCare Australia, Macleay Landcare, National Parks and Wildlife Service (DECC), Saltair Flora and Fauna Control, Kempsey Shire Council and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.

WetlandCare Australia’s Project Officer, Brooke Turner said this is a great opportunity for landholders and the local community to get up to speed on local work and find out if current funding is available for managing areas on their property.

The information session outlined

  • Funding available for wetland rehabilitation and management,
  • The Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority direction and funding,
  • Acid Sulphate Soil Remediation, Wet Pasture Management and Streambank Erosion control techniques
  • Maria River Wildlife recovery project
  • Bitou Bush Threat Abatement Plan
  • Dingo Management in Limeburners Creek nature Reserve

Those on the tour around Goolawah saw some of the work being undertaken by the Department of Lands to control Bitou Bush, protection of native grasslands on the headland and Water hyacinth control at Goolawah lagoon. Participants were also interested to see the current bitou removal project at Crescent Head Lookout, being undertaken by Kempsey Shire Council.
