Wetland Restoration Case Studies
Bellinger and Nambucca Coastal Floodplain Acid Sulfate Soil Management Projects
In response to overdainage of floodplains on the North Coast, assistance is being supported by extension and advisory services aiming to improve environmental management of acid sulfate soils (ASS) hot spot areas and the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) on relevant floodplains.
Improved Environmental Management of Acid Sulfate Soils
These projects provide assistance to landholders to actively manage ASS on their properties. The technologies and practices promoted help to strike a balance between acid sulfate soils and flooded pastures.
On-ground works to facilitate active management of the floodplains are to include:
- In-drain structures to prevent low-lying areas from overtopping with tidal water;
- Drain shallowing;
- Rehabilitation of ASS scalds and the reintroduction of natural wetting and drying cycles, utilizing seasonally ponded freshwater; and
- The re-establishment of native wetland species.
Other floodplain on-ground works include the provision of off-stream watering points and fencing of waterways from livestock.
Assistance for landholders
WetlandCare Australia will provide the following services for landholders:
- Technical support for farmers and landholders;
- Field days that demonstrate drainage, grazing and fire management in acid sulfate soil landscapes;
- Information about the use of wetland rehabilitation techniques as a management tool for reducing acid drainage into estuaries; and
- Information about alternative landuse and drainage management practices.
